Beginner’s Guide to MMJ
New to marijuana? Here are answers to most common questions for newbies!
How much medical marijuana can I possess?
From the Montana Medical Marijuana Program Cardholder’s FAQ:
Registered cardholders may possess the following:
one (1) ounce of marijuana flower OR
eight (8) grams of marijuana concentrate OR
800 mg of THC in marijuana infused products or edibles OR
Sixteen (16) .5 ml vape cartridges OR
Eight (8) 1 ml vape cartridges
one (1) ounce of marijuana flower = eighty (80) ten-milligram servings, or 800mg of THC in marijuana products or edibles = eight (8) grams of concentrate = eight (8) ml of vape cartridges
If you purchase ½ ounce of flower, you would also be able to purchase four (4) grams of marijuana concentrate OR 400 mg of infused products or edibles OR four (4) 1 ml vape cartridges OR eight (8) .5 ml vape cartridges
What are the different ways I can consume MMJ?
Keeper of the Green provides several ways to consume MMJ. Your choice depends on your personal preference, convenience, and medical needs. Many patients choose to consume in several ways!
- Smoking of flower (bud) – this is the classic way of consuming MMJ!
- Vaporizing of flower (bud) – using a vaporizor to consume flower without the smoke. Keeper of the Green highly recommends vaporizing of well-cured and tested flower as today’s healthiest way to consume MMJ.
- Concentrates – these are concentrated forms of MMJ, consumed via a specialized vapor pen or via other methods.
- Infused edibles – tasty treats, butter, or oil for use in cooking. Edibles take longer to feel the effects (30 – 90 minutes) with the effects lasting much longer than other methods (6-10 hours).
- Tinctures – MMJ extract in an easy to administer liquid.
- Pre-rolled – MMJ flower, ground and already rolled for easy smoking.
How do I choose the best strain for my condition and needs?
In your first visit with Keeper of the Green, we’ll discuss your medical needs and the benefits various strains offer. Many patients choose multiple strains for use in different situations (daytime and nighttime, for example) or to treat symptoms of their condition as needed (pain, anxiety, etc).
How do edibles work?
Unlike smoking, edibles are introduced to the body through the gastrointestinal tract and processed by the liver before entering the blood stream. The liver changes the active ingredients in MMJ into a more potent version which tends to have a stronger, more sedative effect. This makes edibles especially effective for people with sleep disorders caused by pain or general insomnia. People ingesting edibles will often feel the effects within 45 to 90 minutes with the effects lasting between 6 to 10 hours.
How do I know how much of an edible to take?
A common issue with edibles is finding the proper dosage amount. The strength of an edible is determined by the quality and quantity of the MMJ used to create it, as well as an individual patient’s tolerance, body chemistry, and even how much you’ve had to eat. Edibles from Keeper of the Green contain a known amount of MMJ, so dosing can be as predictable as possible. We recommend a small amount to start off – about 5mg. The slow onset of edibles can create even more confusion. Impatient users looking for relief from their symptoms often do not wait long enough and eat more before feeling the effects of the first dose. When in doubt, always start with a small dose and wait at least 2 hours before eating more.
When purchasing edibles from Keeper of the Green, we will discuss proper dosing and what to expect from edibles.
Healthy Living with MMJ
Here are some general tips from Keeper of the Green for incorporating MMJ into your healthy lifestyle for maximum healing!
- Diet / Exercise / MMJ
Following a good diet and getting exercise is fundamental to feeling healthy. Keeper of the Green recommends consuming MMJ as a part of a generally healthy lifestyle in order to maximize healing.
- Entourage Effect
"Whole Plant Medicine" refers to MMJ products made from the entire flower, rather than isolating only one or two components of the MMJ. The MMJ plant contains many therapeutic compounds, which work together to maximize health benefits. This is referred to as the "Entourage Effect". Keeper of the Green produces edibles, solventless concentrates, and tinctures which include the whole plant, in order to gain the interactive synergy of all the available healing compounds in the plant. For more information on the "Entourage Effect", check out this great article.
- Top-shelf Flower
The quality of MMJ greatly affects its ease-of-use and healing power. Consistent strength and quality ensures that the proper dosing is acheived each and every time, and that the effects are predictable with each dose. That’s why Keeper of the Green prioritizes quality of our product above all else!
- Vaporize it!
Keeper of the Green recommends vaporizing well-cured and tested MMJ flower as today’s healthiest way of consuming MMJ. Vaporizing reduces or eliminates the unhealthy compounds found in traditional smoke, while still delivering the medically-beneficial components. Vaporizers can also be pocket-sized, making them very convenient. Keeper of the Green can recommend the right vaporizing solution for you – just ask!
